Brenda Gantt Cabbage Casserole Recipe

Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients:
  • 1 medium green cabbage (800–900g), chopped
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup (300g)
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 to 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup crushed crackers or breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp melted butter (for topping)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
Optional:
  • ¼ cup cooked bacon bits
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Mixing bowl

  • Baking dish, 9x13 inch

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease a baking dish.
  2. Melt butter in a skillet. Cook onion until soft.
  3. Add cabbage and sauté for 8–10 minutes.
  4. In a bowl, mix soup, sour cream, salt, and pepper.
  5. Combine cabbage with creamy mixture. Add cheese.
  6. Transfer to baking dish and spread evenly.
  7. Mix crushed crackers with melted butter. Sprinkle on top.
  8. Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  9. Rest for 10–15 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Don’t overcook cabbage before baking. It should stay slightly firm.
  • Drain excess moisture to avoid a watery casserole.
  • Use sharp cheddar for better flavor.

  • Let the casserole rest before serving for the best texture.
  • You can prepare it ahead of time and bake it later.
